SOLAR SMASHED RECORDS IN 2012: The U.S. installed a record 3.3 gigawatts of photovoltaic solar power in 2012, a 76 percent increase over the previous year, according to a new year-end industry report. Solar installations have ramped up so quickly, in fact, that those 3.3 gigawatts represent nearly 46 percent of the total of 7.2 gigawatts of solar power ever installed in the U.S. Much of that staggering growth is due to government support, including a number of utility-scale projects that came online in 2012 after being backed by federal loan guarantees, according to the report conducted by GTM Research and commissioned by the Solar Energy Industries Association.
