Hypower is staying ahead of the curve with two impressive projects in South Florida. PortMiami is undergoing significant development, with Hypower serving as the general contractor for the world’s largest shore power project. This initiative will enable approximately 20 cruise ships to connect to shore power within the first year.

The port focuses on maximizing its limited space through denser development. To accommodate future growth, the port, which spans around 520 acres, is opening the world’s largest cruise terminal. The port is a crucial hub for cruise and cargo operations.

A key county goal is to reduce emissions at the port by 50% by 2030. The entire capital development program is designed to support this objective, addressing challenges such as sea level rise, storm surge, electrical capacity, and sustainability in cruise and cargo projects.

PortMiami plays a vital role in welcoming visitors from around the globe, and significant efforts are made behind the scenes to enhance the visitor experience. The port is set to become the first in Florida and the largest on the East Coast to offer shore power at five cruise terminals. Globally, only 35 ports currently provide shore power for cruise ships, representing just 2% of all cruise ports. Shore power allows docked vessels to turn off their engines and connect to the local grid, reducing emissions by up to 98%.

Since the pandemic, PortMiami has introduced three new architectural cruise terminals, transforming the skyline.

Hypower is also the electrical contractor for the MSC cruise terminal, which will be the world’s largest. This terminal will eventually accommodate three cruise ships from two differ

ent cruise lines. The first phase, set to open by the end of this year, will include two berths, with a third berth, known as berth 10, planned for completion by the end of 2028.

The MSC terminal is unique, as it departs from the traditional model of one terminal per ship. Instead, it will function more like an airport, with one terminal capable of servicing up to three cruise vessels from two different lines.

PortMiami is continually advancing its capital development programs on the cruise side, aiming to stay ahead of increasing volumes and ensuring the port’s infrastructure is robust. Upcoming cargo projects are also aligned with the net-zero concept.

“Our ultimate goal is to establish one of the nation’s first end-to-end net-zero supply chains,” said Ms. Webb. “This means the entire cargo movement, from electric tugboats greeting vessels at sea to electric cranes handling cargo in our yards, will be part of our NetZero Program, ultimately ensuring a sustainable supply chain to its final destination.”
