An important lesson from Japan's devastating disaster is our nation's need for a comprehensive energy policy that incorporates energy security, fuel diversity, and economic development. Renewable energy plays critical role in achieving all three.

Currently, the U.S. relies primarily on fossil fuels and nuclear energy. In some cases, like Florida, natural gas is taking on a much greater role. In the last decade, Florida's dependence on natural gas has grown from about 17% to 50%. Some predict that dependence will grow to 75%. What happens when that supply is shut down by some unforeseen natural or manmade disaster?
